"The figure, which was finally passed slowly from man to man for close and careful study, was between seven and eight inches in height, and of exquisitely artistic workmanship. It represented a monster of vaguely anthropoid outline, but with an octopuslike head whose face was a mass of feelers, a scaly, rubbery-looking body, prodigious claws on hind and fore feet, and long, narrow wings behind. This thing, which seemed instinct with a fearsome and unnatural malignancy, was of a somewhat bloated corpulence, and squatted evilly on a rectangular block or pedestal covered with undecipherable characters. The tips of the wings touched the back edge of the block, the seat occupied the center, whilst the long, curved claws of the doubled-up, crouching hind legs gripped the front edge and extended a quarter of the way down toward the bottom of the pedestal. The cephalopod head was bent forward, so that the ends of the facial feelers brushed the backs of the huge forepaws which clasped the croucher's elevated knees. The aspect of the whole was abnormally lifelike, and the more subtly fearful because the its source was so totally unknown. Its vast, awesome, and incalculable age was unmistakable; yet not one link did it show with any known type of art belonging to civilization's youth-or indeed to any other time."
H.P. Lovecraft, Call of Cthulhu
This one looked better in my head. This was pen and ink on paper. I scanned the ink drawing and placed it onto of a scan of some homemade paper, so it's not entirely a traditional piece. Total time was about and hour and half, a long time for me.
Always worthy to see what sort of interpretation one can get from words. Nicely done!! The shading mix gives it a soft, yet grainy effect. Hard to tell if its a marble or polished stone. I almost look forward to seeing a statuette on sale at ebay due to your rendition. The bottom reminds me of the magic puzzle-box from Hellbound Heart.
BTW, have you checked out *dcarson's gallery?? He's a major Lovecraftian artist/fan and does most of the Cthulhu styled works for numerous books and magazines. Seems you both have a bit in common.
Ah, my dark master, you captured his image perfectly

I'd like to show you some awesome nature related work from more or less unknown artists which deserve more attention - this is a must see, you won't regret it!!!
Daily Literature Deviations is a group that is dedicated to bringing literature to the forefront of the deviantArt community. We attempt to accomplish this by daily featuring Literature artists from around the community that deserve the recognition, but are not getting it.
Each day we will feature 5 deviations from the Literature categories in a News Article. In order to support the artists that we feature, we ask that you the news article as well as check out the individual pieces. We understand that each day you may not be able to check out each and every one of the pieces, everyone has their own things going on. We just ask that you make an attempt to help support the growing Literature community.
I'm a lover of visual impacts. I like brilliant colors and shapes. And I decided to collect a whole stack of deviations that reflect that taste. These pieces showcased below deserve every bit of publicity you can give them. x)P
